The town is closely linked to the story of the arrival in Galicia of the remains of the Appostle Saint James, an event which, according to tradition, took place in this very area. It is said that the boat carrying his remains came ashore here before continuing on the place where the city of Santiago de Compostela would later built.
One of the great symbols of this connection is the Pedróna Roman altar which, according to tradition, was used to to moor the apostolic boat and is now preserved in the Church of Santiago de Padrón. This monument gave the town its name and is one of the foremost symbolic testimonies to its close connection with the origins of the Jacobean tradition.
Padrón is also an important crossroads of pilgrimage routes: several of the main routes of the Camino de Santiago pass through the municipality, historically making the town a place of passage, gathering and hospitality for pilgrims. Adding to this is the Camino de la Pedronía, a route that revives the ancient tradition of pilgrimage from Santiago de Compostela to Padrón, following the route that links the Apostle's tomb with the place where, according to tradition, his arrival on Galician soil began.
